Tanita BC534 Glass InnerScan Body Composition Monitor Review

I made the mistake of purchasing a less expensive Conair Thinner scale. It was woefully inaccurate, and if I stepped on it more than once, my weight varied by 3-5 pounds!! Back to the store that went for a full refund!! I also had a less expensive Tanita that I really liked, but the BMI function quit working after a few short months.I was able to return it to the place of purchase without a hassle. Figuring I got a dud Tanita, I was willing to give this brand another try. So, I bought the BC-534 as a replacement.

This one is as accurate as my Dr.'s scale.Don't look to step on an off of this scale for a better reading, because the repeatability on this one is excellent. I like the bone density and especially the BMI readout. I think the BMI on this Tanita scale is better than on the less expensive Tanita that I returned. The numbers are nice, big and high contrast for those of us with less than perfect eyesight.

I only give this four stars, because it isn't cheap, and the glass platform will need frequent cleaning if dust and water spots drive you crazy. You will also have to program it initially for your own use, which doesn't take long to do, and is easy.

Tanita BF-683W Body Fat/Body Water Feature, White Review

Be wary of Tanita and their warranty claims.The product itself was decent, and fairly accurate, however Tanita is not a company that prides itself in customer service and product support.I used my scale in a normal bathroom environment, and after just 3 months you could see evaporation underneath the screen.I don't know if a gasket had a crack in it, or what the issue might have been, but the unit couldn't withstand the normal humidity of a bathroom.In fact, the unit was a good 20 feet from any active water, like a shower and tub.

I shipped the unit in, and without even so much as a courtesy call, the "customer service manager" returned my unit with a note that my warranty claim was refused, even though I had spoken to someone before about the issue, and said it would be replaced no problem.The customer service manager was nice enough, but said that even though it was well within the boundaries of his discretion, he was going to refuse the claim, because they refuse all like claims regarding evaporation.He even admitted that it happens fairly often.

Stay away.

His recommendation?Buy another Tanita, and not place it in the bathroom.Right.

Ok, so I know that your weight will vary from day to day, and even throughout the day.However, I didn't think the body fat was going to vary so much.I've had this scale for less than 24 hours, and EVERY TIME I STEP ON IT, I get different numbers.Now, I'm a small girl, weighing around 120 with a body fat percentage of... well, I don't know.I stepped on it once, and the body fat was 22.7 percent.Stepped off, let it turn off, and stepped back on.Body fat 20.5 percent.And on and on and on.Went the same way with the weight.Everything from 119.4 to 123.6 within a matter of FIVE MINUTES.I don't know if my posture was different, or if my feet were in different places, or whatever, but if it's going to change that much from moment to moment, it doesn't serve my purposes.I'll be returning this one immediately, and trying a different brand.

I purchased this product thinking, "why not? It is cheap." Well boy was I right. The reading seems to be more a function of the info that you give it rather than any sort of body reading. My mom and I have the exact same readout (despite VERY different body types) as long as we enter the same info into the unit. This product was a severe letdown.

Health o Meter BFM683KD-01 Body Fat and Hydration Scale, White Review

Found the scale to be a little annoying - you do need to read the manual, or you may find yourself adding a new user while trying just to weigh yourself.

I was satisfied with the scale and its readings, which were very consistent, until this week.I stepped on it - nothing happened; it appeared the batteries had died after about 2 years.Ok, fine.

I replaced the batteries with just-bought/brand new ones.Nothing.Repeated with more new batteries.
Still nothing.

This is simply not acceptable - I didn't expect this to be a disposable item.

Tanita BC553 Ironman InnerScan Body Composition Monitor PRO Series Review

This scale/bodyfat tester is of great quality. I have also been very impressed with the overall accuracy. Both my wife and I are trainers and are pretty nutty about tracking our weight and bodyfat. The numbers are fairly consistant over time and compare well with other impedence testers and caliper body fat tests.
The overall body scan is also helpful, giving bone mass, percentage of water, muscle weight, and metabolic age. It says that I have a metabolic age of 12 though I am 37 years old -- so of course I'm going to like this thing!

Omron HBF-306 Body Fat Analyzer Review

The Omron HBF-306 is very simple to use. Because it uses electrical resitance and calculated "wing span" to measure BF%, it's possible (due to differences in arm length) that your reading may not be 100% accurate compared to a clinical "immersion" test. However, it is definitely consistent! I also have caliper type pinchers and found them too inconsistent (unless you can pinch the same exact spot each time).

With the Omron HBF-306, you can easily track changes in your body fat % as you progress through your fitness training. You'll be able to easily tell if your losing fat and/or gaining muscle by monitoring your BF% along with your weight. Check your weight and body fat % first thing in the morning for the most consistent readings. I highly recommend it.

Homedics SC-373 ProgressTracker Digital Scale, 400lb/180kg. Capacity Review

I have an extremely similar scale to this from the same manufacturer(mine has green display, and the middle part extends to the bottom of the scale.Still has the same 3 buttons.This scale is both accurate and consistent.Yeah, you can fool it once in a while if you weigh yourself and then within 10 seconds weigh yourself with a 3.5 oz weight. I put a 20 pound weight on it and it read 20.2 lb.The .2 doesn't bother me - to be honest it is probably the cheap weight I have.If I weigh myself and then drink 5 oz of water and weigh myself again after a minute has passed, it fairly accurately reflects the difference.You have to remember it's rounding to .2 pound increments.So it's entirely possible that if you eat one pound of food, the weight may seem to go up as little as .8 lbs and as high as 1.2 (at it's least accurate, when it has to round way down on one end and way up on the other).Over the long haul, I believe it really is accurate to the .2 lbs.

The progress tracker is actually quite simple- it is the instructions that are bad. You just hit the "set" button, use the up and down arrows to select which person (1-4) you want to do, then hold in the set button until the "0.0" pounds displays.Weigh yourself.The first time you do it, it sets the weight. Do the same thing if you want the progress info - hit set, pick the person number with up and down arrows, and hold set until the scale shows 0.0 lbs, weigh yourself.It will tell you what you weighed last time, how much you lost, etc. while you stand on it.

This is a good scale.I've had bad ones that float 1 lb in either direction while claiming to be accurate to .2 lbs - this is not one of them. It feels sturdy, the foot pads are more comfortable than solid plastic, and the display really is cool looking.Also, if it's like the model I got, it takes regular old AAA batteries, which should be included in the box.

Accu-Measure Fitness 3000 Personal Body Fat Tester Review

The caliper is *great* and the myotape can be useful, too.Both are easy to use.

Some reviews have said the caliper is too simple to be effective, but they are mistaken.Their problem is not with the caliper, but the way they are using it (see more below).This product is recommended by the pros, and there is no reason to pay any more.

Caliper: It's a little tough to get a consistent reading, but with practice it gets easier.The product has a great "click" feature so you can never push too hard.Do not use the instructions or the chart that comes with the product, however, as it will decrease the accuracy and consistency of your body fat measurements.A much more reliable method is to use the internet (see below).

Myotape: Very easy to use and good compliment to caliper.

How to maximize this product using the internet:
1)EXRX dot net has a page which lists the skinfold sites to measure under /Testing/BodyCompSites.html and a calculator page under /Calculators/BodyComp.html that will give you the appropriate fat %.I use the 3 site method since the 7 site method requires the help of another person, and it's not necessarily that much superior, anyway.
2)gain-weight-muscle-fast dot com /body-tape-measurements.html lists further regions to measure
3)Each time you measure (weekly, monthly, etc), do it the same time of day in the same exact spot.This will help minimize error.

Note, the instructions which come with the caliper do work, it's just that it isn't the best method, which is why some fitness freaks were complaining.Consistency across measurements is the most important thing when measuring body fat, and the suprailiac is terribly tough spot to hit consistently.Veer just a little off and the reading will change.But if you use the other method I listed, these problems will be alleviated.Also, the 3 site method is more accurate, with minimal additional effort.
