My immediate reaction upon opening the box was shock out how tiny the bars are. Each one weighs in at a measly 23 grams. Compare that to 41 grams for a regular Hershey's chocolate bar. However I think that a Hershey's bar may not be the correct bar to compare it to because after tasting it I was taken with how similar it was to a Butterfinger. In fact if you cut off a small piece, put it in my mouth and told me it was a Butterfinger I would probably believe you. Personally I love Butterfingers so from a taste standpoint it scores high marks. However the point of the bar is to lose weight and nobody would think that a Butterfinger would help you lose weight, even a slimmed down version.My suspicion is the makers of the bar had two goals in mind. Keep the bar at or below 100 calories and make sure the fat count is as low as possible. It hits the 100 calories mark but much of the cost is in size. A Butterfinger is a whopping 60 grams and 270 calories but from a calorie per gram standpoint the Butterfinger and Slim-Fast bar are nearly exactly equal. The percentage of fat grams are actually worse for the Slim-Fast bar relative to its size and the Butterfinger is far better when it comes to sodium. Another thing I noticed is that the first three ingredients in the Slim-Fast bar are sugar, corn syrup and dry roasted peanuts while the Butterfinger starts with sugar, corn syrup and ground roasted peanuts.
So let's get down to price. For $29.00 you get 48 bars. I have to say that the packing seems less than eco-friendly since 6 bars in a box only occupy like 10% of the space. So at the current price on Amazon each bar is about 60 cents. You can buy a box of 36 Butterfingers on Amazon for $22.33 which comes to 62 cents per bar. Since the Slim-Fast bar seems to be equivalent to about 1/3 of a Butterfinger it would seem to me that a much better bargain would be to buy the Butterfingers and chop them into thirds (a task which I realize is challenging given the crumbly nature of a Butterfinger). However if you actually want to put something of substance in your belly a 105 gram apple is only 55 calories and a medium size banana is 105 calories with a lot less fat.
A few years back I lost 50 pounds which put my weight nicely into the normal range of the BMI. The only reason I'm on the high end of normal is because of about 20 to 30 pounds of muscle I'm carrying. I didn't do it using Slim-Fast or Jenny Craig or Atkins or any diet program. I did it by eliminating fast food completely and almost all sodas. The Slim-Fast bar seems counterintuitive to me for losing weight. Better to try and alter your taste in sweets rather than have a mini-Butterfinger every day. Stick with basic foods and try to reserve sweets for an occasional indulgence rather than as part of a daily weight loss program. The trouble with weight loss food is they create a chemical monstrosity to try and reduce the fat and calories but in this case it just appears to me to be a mini-candy bar at the cost of a full sized bar.
